What is Scopa?
Scopa (meaning "broom" in Italian) is one of Italy's most popular traditional card games, dating back to the 18th century. The game is played with a 40-card Neapolitan deck featuring four distinctive suits:
- Denari (Coins) - Golden coins representing wealth
- Coppe (Cups) - Ornate chalices or goblets
- Spade (Swords) - Curved scimitars
- Bastoni (Clubs/Batons) - Ceremonial wooden clubs
How to Play Scopa
The objective is to capture cards from the table and score points. Each player is dealt 3 cards, and 4 cards are placed face-up on the table. On your turn:
- Play one card from your hand
- If it matches a table card's value, or the sum of multiple cards, you capture them
- If no capture is possible, your card stays on the table
- Clearing ALL table cards scores a "Scopa" (sweep) — worth 1 bonus point!
Scoring in Scopa
At the end of each round, points are awarded for:
- Cards: Most cards captured = 1 point
- Denari: Most coin cards captured = 1 point
- Settebello: Capturing the 7 of Denari = 1 point
- Primiera: Best prime hand = 1 point
- Scope: Each table sweep = 1 point
First player to reach 11 points wins!
The Primiera
The Primiera score is calculated from your highest-value card in each suit. Card values for Primiera: 7 (21 points), 6 (18), Ace (16), 5 (15), 4 (14), 3 (13), 2 (12), Face cards (10).
